Local Group in the North East to meet up in January and February

Mark Siddall of the North East Group has planned two get togethers at the beginning of 2012.  The first of these is on Wednesday 4th January 2012 followed by another proposed for 1st February.

The regular meetings in Newcastle, at The Bridge Hotel, Newcastle, Tyne and Wear, NE1 1RQ, start at 6.30 p.m

Mark Siddall, is the leader of the North East Local Group.
Mark has his own architectural practice and sustainability consultancy and, through undertaking the position as Senior Lecturer in Construction at Northumbria University, is making a concerted effort to assist the construction industry with the delivery of low energy / low carbon buildings. On all fronts his interest is, as ever, that the buildings perform well, not only in theory but in reality also.

Feedback on the meeting . . . . .

As attendance was fairly low in retrospect it was perhaps a little to soon after all of the festivities. Key topics that were raised included the theme of the next meeting, David MacKay’s book Sustainability Without the Hot Air and a number of the sustainable low energy projects in the area that group members are currently working on.

It was proposed that the subject for the next meeting would be sustainable acoustics; to be presented by local acoustician, and AECB member, Jack Harvie-Clarke of Apex Acoustics. The aim will be to define ‘sustainable acoustics’ and determine how it may be delivered in practice. As Jack’s company also undertakes air leakage pressure testing it will be interesting to gain an understanding of how the two subject areas interact (one preferring separation and the other continuity) and how any conflicts may be resolved.

Somerset, Wiltshire, Avon and Dorset meeting on 12th January 2012

Somerset, Wiltshire, Avon and Dorset Local Group – organised by Mark Kingsley – will meet up to  talk about what it takes to make buildings more energy efficient at 7.30 pm on Thursday 12th January 2012.

This will be a ‘back to basics’ topic and will no doubt spark a good discussion amongst the enthusiastic core members who have a wide sphere of expertise and experience.  Come along and join the debate.

Venue:  Function Room (First Floor) at 7.30pm  at The Cornerhouse, 1 Christchurch Street East, Frome, Somerset BA11 1QA Tel: 01373 472042  RSVP Mark Kingsley c/o ‘debbie’ at ‘aecb.net’

Feedback from the meeting . . . .

The Somerset, Wiltshire, Avon and Dorset’s meeting in Frome on 12th January focused on ‘back to basics’ and how to find a way for AECB members to communicate the AECB message to the ‘man in the street’.

Mark Kingsley showed members a draft presentation that created much discussion from the 14 members there.  It was obviously the result of much research and work and an excellent starting point for the difficult aim of having a positive influence on not only the ‘professionals’ but also driving retrofit  from the end user.  Mark invited members to comment on the presentation – looking at it from a layman’s point of view – and, in the usual style of AECB Local Group events, there followed much discussion with varying points of view.

There were, of course, conflicting opinions of members with different interests, experiences and expertise in the sphere of sustainable building.  This is what makes the Local Group meetings so stimulating.  However, most members did agree that there is a need for keeping the language, illustrations and graphs  simple and with a clear message – easier said than done.

This meeting highlighted a demand by members – both in this region and also at other Local Group events – for some guidelines on how to get the message across.  The springboard for all this discussions seems to have been the Language Workshop at the 2011 Conference – although the success of this workshop, and the follow up event at the London Local Group, may have been as a result of the growing interest in this (and not the other way round).

It is the aim of the Somerset, Wiltshire, Avon and Dorset Group that this presentation, with relevant revisions, will form the basis for members to provide impartical advice on how interested homeowners can make their houses more efficient and comfortable.  It is also intended to promote the name of the AECB and to encourage people to have further discussions with AECB members on the basic principles of low carbon/low energy buildings as well as in their specific areas of expertise.

Towards the end of the evening, Katie Duke showed members a mock up of her thermal blind system, as previously requested, and demonstrated how their insulating properties can solve certain problem areas of inadequate existing windows and improving thermal performance to all window openings.

The Somerset, Wiltshire, Avon and Dorset Group (aka SWAD) have a lively bunch of regular members and are planning meetings on the second Thursday of each month.

The Government consultation on the Green Deal and the associated Energy Company Obligation (ECO) has now been published

Download our ‘Companion to the Green Deal Consultation’ documents here:

Who’s who in the Green Deal

Assessment-Advice-Measures

Customers – Who Will Get What?

Who will be doing the work?

The full consultation documentation can be downloaded from the DECC website here

AECB members all have their own areas of expertise, and this consultation could be an opportunity to shape the Green Deal/ECO in such a way as to ensure it does help deliver truly sustainable refurbishment of our leaky building stock.

It is by no means certain that the Green Deal/ECO will be fit to deliver the kind of refurbishment that AECB members want to deliver – and it is up to everyone with an interest in the process to cast a critical eye over the government’s proposals, and to feed back to government where changes should be made.

Ministers and civil servants have made clear on numerous occasions that this is to be the opportunity to shape the detail. To start the process off, we have picked out some critical areas in the consultation where questions remain. Continue reading

News from the Local Groups

The AECB London Group met on 16th November 2011 for a revisit of the 2011 Conference workshop topic “Does Language Matter”.  Cath Hassell and Melissa Taylor introduced the evening with their thoughts, Cath exploring the meaning and use of the word ‘black water’ finding it to have a racist origin, while not illuminating the meaning ‘foul water’ or ‘sewage treatment for direct or indirect use’.  See her article at http://www.greenspec.co.uk/words-water-meaning.php.

Melissa gave a thoughtful look at accuracy and ambiguity in language and how both can be useful, with some great illustrations of how bringing people to work together under the umbrella ‘sustainability’ can be both useful and confusing!

The discussion was quite different from that at the Conference, and ranged pretty widely, thanks to all who took part.

Member News: Koru Architects, Hove

AECB members, Koru Architects in Hove have been awarded the RIBA Downland Prize 2011 for sustainability for their house/studio in Hove.

The Downland Prize for Architects is awarded annually to a Chartered Architects based in south east England.  It celebrates the added value that an architect brings to relatively small project (total cost under £1.5 million) and the ‘chemistry’ between architects, clients, contractors and suppliers of successful buildings.

The house/studio project cleverly makes use of a constricted, sloping site through split-level design and creates a series of interesting, unique spaces.  A top lit vertical circulation volume floods the house with daylight and acts as the ‘lungs’ by ventilating and cooling the spaces on warm days.  Glazing to the south-facing rooms maximises passive solar gain, and a roof-integrated solar pv and thermal array provides part of the family’s electricity and hot water, the mains grid and a biomass boiler covers the shortfalls in winter.

Mark Pellant and Abi Torr, directors of Koru Architects have over a decade’s experience in the design and construction of low energy, sustainable buildings.  They combine inspiring design with indepth knowledge of sustainable building technologies.  For further information please refer to their website www.koruarchitects.co.uk.
