Beattie Passive on the Flying Factory expansion

Creating Enterprise factory near Holyhead.

Beattie Passive is excited to announce the expansion of
its Flying Factories with five key partners across the UK
including Scotland and Wales already engaged in
setting up their own factories to deliver homes using the
Beattie Passive system and there are more to follow in
2019.

The Beattie Passive Flying Factories deliver Passivhaus
standard housing with off-site manufacture and rapid onsite
assembly. Through in-depth training, our partners are delivering homes that are built to the high standards of Passivhaus providing comfortable, low maintenance properties with reduced heating costs of up to 90%. Our Flying Factory Partners benefit from being able to build their own homes, employ local labour and control their
costs of every stage of the build.

The organisations are supported by Beattie Passive to set up their own Flying Factories to deliver
their local housing requirements. Beattie Passive are currently partnering with the following
organisations.
• Creating Enterprise – a wholly owned subsidiary of Cartrefi
Conwy Housing Association.
• Yoker Housing Association – a community based Housing
Association in Glasgow.
• The Toolshed – a social enterprise education provision
managed by The New Meaning Foundation.
• Wrekin Housing Trust and partners of the Marches Construction Ready Partnership.
• Stewart & Shields – a well-established contractor based in Helensburgh and operate across Scotland and selected areas of the UK

Creating Enterprise is a wholly owned subsidiary of Cartrefi Conwy
Housing Association. The organisation was set up as a Social
Enterprise providing a wide range of property maintenance activity to
both private and public sector, reinvesting profits to give those furthest
from the job market work place opportunities. They are now
embarking on an ambitious development programme of quality,
affordable homes across the North Wales Coast. Creating Enterprise
are the first Welsh organisation to set up their Beattie Passive Factory
to start manufacturing a number of small developments across North Wales.

Andrew Bowden – CEO at Cartrefi Conwy said
“Beattie Passive not only deliver high quality Passivhaus homes, they also actively engage with the
local community to bring vital skills and education in construction. These values run parallel to
our own and having outlined our housing objectives, it was clear that a Factory would be hugely
effective in helping us to achieve them. We look forward to a long and productive relationship with
Beattie Passive.”

The Toolshed is part of a social enterprise education provision managed by
The New Meaning Foundation, part of a not-for-profit organisation. The
Toolshed teaches and encourages young people to learn new skills and
help them develop confidence, self-belief and to gain life skills. Beattie Passive has provided training for 5 young people at their Training Academy in Norfolk on a workshop-based training course. Following on from the workshop based training, the trainees developed their skills on-site though erecting structures for Beattie Passive and will next set-up their factory in order to deliver units for Vale of Aylesbury Housing.

David Lett – Trustee Director at New Meaning Foundation said
“We came across the Beattie Passive system five years ago and instantly saw how it would support
our vision to establish ToolShed Training and Works centres. The fact that the Beattie Passive
structures can be built using one/two skilled trades people and remainder can be unskilled was
particularly attractive to us because it supports our training and positive reinforcement model and
through training unskilled workers in a relatively short period of time we can expand the number of build
contracts and work placements that we can deliver. Within the next 12 months we are aiming to have
three teams capable of building Beattie Passive structures, expanding the Beattie Passive build
team to 20 people and offering 15 work placements per year.”

Yoker Housing Association is a small community based Housing Association
in Glasgow. Designs are underway for 15 new bungalows and cottage flats
on the former Blawarthill Hospital site, Glasgow. These will be
manufactured in a local Flying Factory by a social enterprise, Community
Workforce Partnership, who train hard-to-reach 18-24 yr-olds.

Lesley Bryce, Development Officer said:
“The Beattie Passive houses will be built using local labour under the employability model. This
model will enable the trainees to move from welfare to work – providing them with a waged training
placement and certified qualifications. The project is expected to recruit up to 40 trainees during the
course of the programme, providing them with training to enable them to progress in the mainstream
labour market.”

Wrekin Housing Trust and partners have just been awarded a £650,000 Government grant to provide a training hub aimed at providing opportunities for the unemployed, addressing Shropshire’s housing shortage, and boosting the county’s construction industry. The factory training hub will be equipped to focus upon learning skills used in the construction of Passivhaus homes. Known as the Marches Construction Ready Partnership the group which includes Beattie Passive, aims to introduce around 400 trainees to the construction sector, by training the long-term unemployed, students and people looking to make a career change into the construction industry.

David Wells the Wrekin Housing Trust’s Head of Operational Services said:
“We are looking forward to working with Beattie Passive over the coming months as partners on the Marches Construction Ready Partnership, and as we deliver the programme we are looking forward to seeing the flying factory and whole timber frame technology concepts for ourselves.”

Stewart & Shields are a well-established contractor based in Helensburgh and operate across Scotland and selected areas of the UK. Beattie Passive Flying Factory Offering
Beattie Passive’s Flying Factory offering enables organisations to deliver their your own Passivhaus Standard housing with offsite manufacture and rapid onsite assembly / erection. The factory provides many benefits in its use, including faster delivery times due to the ability to locate the factory on or close to the build site and reduced costs as there is no need to transport panels across the country. One of the key benefits is that local labour or subcontractors
(including DLOs) can be trained to manufacture and erect Passivhaus.
