At Gillespie Yunnie Architects, we have developed an award winning reputation for our work within historic, sensitive and constrained environments.

We work hard to nurture excellent working relationships with our clients, local councils, Historic England and stakeholders. We have established trust and credibility through our open, pragmatic and collaborative working ethos. As a result, we have a 100% success rate in securing Planning and LBC approvals.

We pride ourselves on bringing fresh ideas and a positive approach to our work. We relish the challenge of complex projects, difficult sites and tricky briefs.

We are passionate about what we do and want your experience of working with us to be positive, enjoyable and rewarding.

Jackmans House

Jackmans House is a new residential property within the gardens of an existing dwelling.

Houses locally are simple, typically rendered, some with brick plinths and occasionally completely brick faced. The proposal acknowledges these forms and materials with a palate of warm buff/grey brick forming the ground floor plinth and a timber clad upper storey with cantilevering flat roof over the southern terrace. The roof itself is planted so that green nature of this domesticated corner of the site is retained.

The house was carefully designed to be cost effective to construct and to use. The building is super insulated with good airtightness which allows for efficient mechanical ventilation with heat recovery. The glazed ‘cactus house’ on the south west elevation captures winter sun and minimises the additional background heating that is required to be provided by the air source heat pump, itself powered by a concealed photovoltaic array.

Royal William Yard

In 1999 Urban Splash were tasked by the South West Regional Development Agency to transform the redundant Royal William Yard to a thriving sustainable mixed use community. Since then, Gillespie Yunnie have been working with Urban Splash to deliver over 200 new homes, 40,000sqft of offices and 32,500sqft of commercial space. Alongside these key regeneration projects we have developed a series of smaller place making interventions that have resulted in the creation of one of the premier destinations in the South West.

The conversion of the Grade I listed Mills Bakery forms one of the most significant phases of development at Royal William Yard and provides a mix of residential, office and restaurant accommodation. In total, 79 apartments and 6000 sqm of commercial and office space were created. The design is clean and contemporary, utilizing a simple palette of timber, glass and white finished surfaces to contrast with the rough textures of the existing Grade I Listed fabric.

Civic Centre Plymouth

The Civic Centre was completed in 1962 and was designed by Jellicoe, Ballantyne & Coleridge, based on the earlier concept work of City Architect Hector Stirling. The building is central to the Abercrombie Plan for Plymouth, standing as the central manifestation of the city’s post-war renewal.

An iconic, mid-century building in the heart of Plymouth’s city centre, we are poised to bring the Civic Centre building back to life. We plan to regenerate this Grade II listed structure into a mixed-use destination worthy of its iconic status.

The scheme will see the 14-storey former council headquarters converted into apartments with 4,600m² of office, shops and leisure space on the lower levels.

The proposals will open up the ground floor, making it an active public space filled with outside seating for cafés, bars and restaurants, and reuse the existing landscaped pools while creating new connections through the scheme from the Theatre Royal and Civic Square.
