Townhouse Transformation, Devon

This is a large historic house in Exeter, Devon that required updating and restoration throughout to make a family home fit for the 21st Century. The heritage and character of this house make a positive contribution to its setting. hmad|architects sensitive design approach addressed the client’s brief to retain and enhance the external character, whilst providing a new room layout that will offer more flexible living spaces.

hmad|architects were delighted to secure Planning and Conservation Area Consents for this project following really positive feedback from local residents during the planning application process.

Completed in Spring 2022, our clients are now enjoying their new family home in the heart of the city in this sensitively restored heritage building.

'The Lost Kitchen' - Chettiscombe Barn, Devon

This project involved bringing a dilapidated agricultural barn into a new viable use. Our challenge was to accommodate the barn’s new life as a local, sustainable restaurant whilst retaining its historic character. This newly restored barn is now thriving in its new use as ‘The Lost Kitchen‘ in Chettiscombe, Devon.

Being a Grade II listed building, hmad|architects worked closely with the owner and the operator to achieve listed building consent that would enable them to realise the brief for a sensitive transformation and conversion of this redundant Linhay barn built in the 1800’s, into a contemporary light-filled and comfortable but cosy restaurant.

Bramley - Low Energy Bungalow

hmad|architects created a striking design which spectacularly transformed this property into a beautiful energy-efficient family home. Our design features a stunning double height flexible living space with a bespoke glass and timber staircase to the new first-floor office and bedrooms, in addition to contemporary high-performance aluminium glazing and sliding doors which allow a seamless transition to the gardens.

We incorporated several renewable energy technologies into the design in order to reduce the carbon footprint of the home and reduce the client’s energy bills. These included: solar thermal; an air source heat pump; whole house mechanical ventilation with heat recovery and a log burner.

“The continued support of hmad|architects led us through a difficult planning application process. The design evolved as we considered their impressive modelled images. The attention to detail has been excellent.”
