Real-life Retrofit: Case studies – 1. Damp Revamp: Gloomy Victorian Terrace to Snug Pad

November 18, 2021 @ 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm

The first in our series of three events looking at challenges and solutions within different retrofit case studies.

The built environment is a major contributor to the environmental pressures our world is facing. Rather than demolishing existing buildings, retrofitting of existing buildings can play a crucial part in meeting net-zero carbon targets. Retrofit involves modifications to existing buildings that will improve energy efficiency or decrease energy demand.

When contractor Rory Mundell and his client started work on this mid-terrace Victorian property on the east side of Bristol, it was suffering from severe damp and heat loss thanks to uninsulated internal floors sitting below external ground levels and single glazed windows. The house needed a full transformation to become a warm, dry and – above all – energy efficient house, whilst maintaining the characteristic charm of a Victorian terrace.

With these goals in mind, Rory set about stripping back the building’s walls, floors and roof, upgrading the building fabric with natural materials where possible to create a building that will provide the client with a healthy and comfortable home. With direct input from the client and the contractor, we find out how the project evolved from the initial plans to the finished home – and the valuable lessons learned along the way.

Join us at the first in our Real-life Retrofit series to hear more and take away some ideas for your own retrofit project.
