With regard to one of the topics on unfinished oak windows. Oak is very open grained, a net result of which although durable it nevertheless is not the most stable of woods and due to weathering effect, and uv rays it easily opens up, especially along its radial plane. One contributer mentioned WR Cedar, this is much more stable than oak far less susceptable to weathering shake etc, so although technicaly less durable than oak nevertheless due to its other qualities should last as long if not longer than oak. A recent study quoted that home grown WRC had the same long lasting qualities as Pacific North West grown. it should be notted that much of the homegrown WRC is of a small diameter and comprises considerable juvenile wood, hence lacks the greater durability, but there is plenty of WRC in the Uk of larger sizes which should contain considerable extractives and hence reater durability, but caution should be excercised that it has not been kilned to too high a temperature, or some of the essential oils in the wood are lost, better to do it the old fashioned way, air dry then moderate kilning.
