Business Description

Austin Design Works are a multidisciplinary design practice based in Nailsworth, Gloucestershire who offer architectural and landscape services in combination or separately, depending on the individual requirements of each client. We enjoy the challenges presented by every stage of a project, from planning and detailed design through to tendering and then on site. Our collaborative and informed design process enables us to gain a good understanding of the context and spirit of each brief, developing imaginative and considered schemes to achieve useful and beautiful spaces. Landscapes take time to evolve, and through high-quality materials and well-considered design, we believe in creating sustainable places for the future. We are equally comfortable working on architectural and/or landscape schemes for bespoke residential developments; exceptional country houses that meet NPPF55 planning criteria; tailored learning environments; museums and heritage buildings; pubs and clubhouses; and a wide range of other commercial projects. We also breathe new life into existing buildings with our impressive renovations and sensitive conservation works. Our expertise in designing with ecological materials and technology, passive energy and healthy building systems allows us to bring sustainability to the core of our projects. We have a solid reputation for building conservation and work to listed buildings, and we are experienced in creating just the right relationship between contemporary interventions and their historic settings. Our experience with community projects has shown that well-implemented landscape improvements can be a catalyst for regeneration, encouraging a sense of civic pride and further investment. The landscape services we offer include masterplanning, planting design, landscape assessment, garden design, woodland and estate management, and tree surveying. Austin Design Works rebranded in July 2016, before which they were David Austin & Associates.

A 1920S HOME BROUGHT INTO THE 21ST CENTURY

We were challenged to modernise and completely update this 5 bedroom 1920’s house, to make it a light filled spacious and functional family home, super insulated and as energy efficient as possible.

This project challenged what could be achieved within the constraints of an existing building and pushed the boundaries of retrofit and renovation.

A SUSTAINABLE & CONTEMPORARY FAMILY HOME

Our client had always seen the potential in this neglected bungalow, cold, damp, yet perfectly placed in its beautifully lush hilltop setting. Passivhaus principles guided the transformation of this bungalow into an extremely energy-efficient family home that celebrates its rural setting at every turn.

We have always had the dream of building our own house and Austin Design Works were top of the list when it came to choosing an architect. We liked everything about their unique ethos and designs and the whole process was seamless and enjoyable. From instruction, full debrief, to coming up with ideas and planning, which went through easily, we were kept informed throughout.

A CONTEMPORARY REIMAGINING OF A CLASSIC GEORGIAN HOME

A harmonious extension of a Cotswold home to create a light-filled kitchen that allows daily life to flow onto the south-facing patio. Reinstatement of the grand open stairwell and alterations to the original rooms have transformed this home and enhanced its classic Georgian features.

We have undertaken two major building projects with ADW. We have particularly valued the positive collaborative approach, enabling us to be very much part of the whole design process. We would not hesitate in recommending them to others
