‘It is many people’s dream to build their own home. For me, this dream became possible in 2008/9. The house that I designed and built has very low energy requirements. Indeed, it would seem that almost all of the heating energy for the house can be provided by the sun and from the incidental gains from people and appliances. This has been achieved through a combination of passive solar design, extremely high levels of insulation, exceptionally good airtightness levels, mechanical heat recovery ventilation, solar capture glass with summer shading to avoid overheating, and by storing excess solar energy in an interseasonal thermal store under the house.’

In this webinar, AECB member Tony Cowling will present a case study, sharing the ups and downs of his personal experience designing and building his own low-carbon home.
