The AECB CarbonLiteâ„¢ Retrofit Foundation training course is an online course, aimed principally at construction professionals and those whose role involves decision making around retrofit.

Why take this course?

This comprehensive course brings together a wealth of knowledge on low energy building retrofit and methodology.

  • Many of our students have begun with our CLR Foundation course, as this provides a thorough grounding in sustainable building and retrofit standards, design, understanding of risks and considerations to inform better decisions, and more technical knowledge about designing and implementing deep low carbon retrofit measures.
  • This course was cited by the UK Government as one of the routes for the buildings sector to upskill towards decarbonising buildings and heating, as part of efforts to meet net zero carbon targets, as part of their Heat and Buildings Strategy.
  • Endoursed by the Passivhaus Intitute – Gain 35 PHI credit points towards renewal of Certified Passivhaus Designer/Consultant qualifications.
  • Those who complete this course also demonstrate that they are in a good position to understand, work with and help deliver projects to meet our AECB CarbonLite Standards . This course is one of the requirements to become an AECB Approved Certifier for the AECB CarbonLite Retrofit Standards.

Course Approach

Students will have a serious interest in how to do advanced energy efficient retrofit and be wanting to deepen your understanding of building physics and the risks associated with measures, to enable you to make informed decisions.

  • To get the most out of taking the full course you will already have good professional knowledge within the construction sector.
  • Homeowners with a desire to drive their own retrofit projects will also find this course useful. While only the more technically minded will be interested in all the detail, there is much useful knowledge even for those who are less technical.
  • This is a fully online, sletf-directed course – Read and follow modules at your leisure, to fit around work and other commitments.
  • There is a multiple choice test at the end of most lessons to check your learning.
  • To round off each of the core modules there will be a task that brings together the information learned throughout the module, using example projects.

Overview of Course Content

  • The direct and indirect benefits of robust retrofit
  • Climate zones, local micro-climates and impact of changing weather patterns
  • Understanding existing building structures and materials
  • Energy and buildings
