Long time AECB friend and CLR course contributor Joseph Little, Assistant Head of School (Construction), Dublin School of Architecture invited the AECB to collaborate with Ireland’s leading Technological University, TU Dublin. The university hosts pioneering researchers and innovators in science and technology who play active roles in informing policy and standards. We were delighted to be invited to share their international outlook and passion for life-long learning. The University leads in STEM disciplines, is a major provider of part-time education and makes a significant contribution to the creative and economic life of Ireland.  

The result of our collaboration is that the AECB can now offer AECB members (and non-members) a professional level academic CPD. Cert in Building Energy Modelling using PHPP. The course is composed of a single self-contained six-week part time e-learning module from TU Dublin’s successful MSc in Building Performance (Energy Efficiency in Design) programme. The course starts on Friday 5th November 2021. 

AECB is also delighted to have secured endorsement for the course from The Passive House Institute (PHI), the independent research institute that has played the crucial role in developing and deploying the Passive House concept.  

The Passive House Institute has developed a flexible system to promote lifelong learning and the gradual acquisition of Passive House knowledge: Once you have acquired a main Passive House Tradesperson, Consultant or Designer certificate, you can earn additional seals by gaining expertise in a specific topic.Following their detailed review, the PHI has awarded 50 PHI credit points to the course – this will be good news for registered CEPH graduates seeking to maintain their PHI credits.

 The CPD Cert. in Building Energy Modelling using PHPP module is designed to enable experienced building design professionals develop and apply an understanding of the international Passive House Planning Pack (PHPP) modelling and design tool when exploring the building performance of existing and new buildings, whether residential or non-residential, in temperate climatic zones such as Ireland or the UK.  

The module presents the robust and repeatedly validated calculation theories and building energy modelling protocols first created by Germany’s Passivhaus Institut in the late 1980s. Through its use of a suite of online tools, videoed lectures, webinars, social media platform and significant feedback, it facilitates the student’s development of skills in the application of the PHPP design tool and explores techniques for upgrading geometry, fabric, and services installations to achieve the Passive House Classic Standard. Formative learning is tested in small online exams and consolidated in a concluding project. 

This CPD module is offered to building design professionals who have no knowledge of the Passive House Standard or the PHPP tool. However, building design professionals who previously attended an industry CPD on PHPP may value the opportunity to refresh, apply and deepen their knowledge in a structured way. The International Passive House Association (iPHA) provides 50 CPD points to students who are successful in passing the module. 

The course costs £870 (+ VAT). 

Graduates will have:  

  • Accumulated ~100 hours of CPD.  
  • Undertaken a 6 Week, Part Time Course.  
  • Attained 10 UK Credits/ 5 EU ECTS (Master’s level).  
  • Acquired 50 credits under the PHI’s CEPH certification scheme.  

Graduates of the CPD Cert. in Energy Modelling PHPP module are equipped with a comprehensive insight into the challenges involved in achieving performance standards as modelled by PHPP. This module acts as a gateway to further learning: graduates are eligible to progress to TUD’s blended online Postgraduate Certificate in Building Performance (Energy Efficiency in Design) which is the first part of a three-part MSc in Building Performance (Energy Efficiency in Design). Graduates can progress to each stage of this programme on a modular basis. They may also enrol on the NSAI-recognised DT775B CPD Diploma in Thermal Bridge Assessment programme to become Registered Thermal Modellers.
