Why do we work to Standards ?
The AECB works with our members to inspire, develop and share sustainable building practice.
Our Standards are a key pillar of the deployment of environmentally responsible building practices and the creation of sustainable low energy, low carbon buildings.
Our AECB CarbonLite™ Standards
The AECB has several Standards that each give building professionals and homeowners alike flexibility in helping the country to reach net zero targets.
These are supplemented with further building guidance on Water, Airtightness and Daylighting.
AECB CarbonLite™ Building and Retrofit Standards
We have three certifiable AECB CarbonLite™ building performance standards:
Related to the AECB CarbonLite™ Standards is the Passivhaus Standard :
These Standards can act as design and specification guides for the client and design team: we encourage formal certification to these Standards for improved Quality Assurance on projects. Projects are now formally certified by an AECB Approved Certifier and uploaded to the AECB Low Energy Buildings Database (LEBD) which showcases many projects including certified and uncertified buildings. All the AECB Standards are based on Passivhaus methodology and use the Passivhaus Planning Package or designPH software for design and certification purposes.
In addition, the AECB has published guidance on the following:
The AECB CarbonLite™ Standards allow for improved comfort, health, energy and carbon performance; they engage and upskill clients, design and construction professionals to make better – and more sustainable - buildings.
To support those considering working to these Standards, the AECB and its training partners provide high quality training. Read about the AECB CarbonLite™ online training courses here.
Many individual AECB members have undertaken the AECB CarbonLite™ training and are now graduates. Those who are integrating retrofit-related training into their professional work are listed here
AECB Approved Certifiers
Our certifiers are key to delivering the AECB CarbonLite™ Standards at scale whilst ensuring high quality new build and retrofit projects.
AECB Approved Certifiers and Modellers will be required to attend quarterly CPD sessions, which includes group discussion and debate, to further refine and develop the AECB CarbonLite™ Standards and the certification process.
In order to become an AECB Approved Certifier for the AECB CarbonLite™ Building Standard they will have one of the following :
- Provided case study evidence demonstrating that they have overseen the completion of two certified Passivhaus or AECB Building Standard buildings
- Be a Passivhaus Certifier
- Hold the CEPH Qualification
- Hold the CPD Cert. Building Energy Modelling using PHPP
- Passed the AECB/CoAction/CarbonLite: PHPP training course
- Hold the Passivhaus Tradesperson Qualification
In addition, for our AECB CarbonLite™ Retrofit Standards, certifiers will have passed one of the following :
- AECB CarbonLite™ Retrofit Foundation course (version C3 or later)
- AECB CarbonLite™ Retrofit Coordination course
- Level 5 Diploma in Retrofit Coordination and Risk Management
