Hosted at the National Self Build & Renovation Centre in Swindon, Wiltshire the conference will focus on Retrofit and the AECB CarbonLite Standards.
The AECB 2024 Conference will focus on practical solutions to decarbonising buildings, with a particular emphasis on approaches which offer most potential to deliver low energy, healthy buildings at scale whilst minimising the use of precious resources and impact on the environment.

Headline Speakers
Rachael Owens is co-Director of the National Retrofit Hub, a non-profit collaborative organisation that brings together those involved in the sector to enable the local delivery of retrofit at scale. Rachael is also an architect and Head of Sustainability at Buckley Gray Yeoman, a practice that champions the adaptive reuse of existing buildings. Rachael sits on the NLA Net Zero expert panel and in 2021 was named a RIBA Journal Rising Star for her work in practice to communicate sustainable design and within the Architects Climate Action Network to campaign for the regulation of embodied carbon emissions. Rachael is a WELL accredited professional. She actively tries to reach out to the wider construction industry to tackle the climate crisis, and has guest tutored at London School of Architecture, the University of East London and Kingston University. In 2023 Rachael joined the RIBA Stirling Prize jury as the sustainability expert.
Edward Dymock is an Architect Associate in BDP’s Glasgow Studio, a certified Passivhaus Designer and the studio’s Sustainability Champion. Ed has a multi-sector and international CV including projects in Masterplanning, Conservation, Residential, Education, Workplace and Transport. Ed is a design focussed architect keen to show that a well designed building can create economic, social and wellbeing benefits, invigorate its setting and bring delight to the lives of its users. He is champion of design that is sustainable, inclusive and lifts your spirit.
BDP is a major international practice of architects, designers, engineers and urbanists that aim to create outstanding places for people. Working in interdisciplinary teams BDP produce integrated, holistic and sustainable solutions.
Jonathan Davies, Spring Design

The Welsh government adoption of the AECB standards
Jonathan is a Passivhaus Designer and AECB CarbonLite Certifier & Building Modeller who has structured his career around a passion for utilising low carbon materials combined with MMC to rapidly deliver low energy buildings. After completing his undergraduate degree in Sydney, Jonathan relocated to Umeå, Sweden for a postgraduate embedded within the Laboratory for Sustainable Architectural Practice. After graduating he returned to the UK to work in private practice and built a portfolio including the UK’s first off-grid Certified Passivhaus dwelling utilising straw SIPs. His focus is on refining conventional techniques to deliver high performance buildings with minimal embodied energy and is passionate about the role of energy modelling tools in data-driven optimisation of architectural design. Alongside practice, Jonathan has been a Visiting Tutor at the Arts University Bournemouth delivering specialist content on low energy and regenerative design. Jonathan is also a founding member of Strawbale Building United Kingdom (SBUK).
Jaime Moya, Spring Design

The Welsh government adoption of the AECB standards
Chartered Architect Jaime has over 25 years of experience in the construction industry. A Certified Passivhaus Designer and member of both the AECB and the Woodknowledge Wales Community of Practice, Jaime’s experience spans architectural practice and private development. The commercial insight this provided continues to inform Jaime’s work in practice focussing on optimising low energy strategies for both open-market and social housing. A passionate advocate of the AECB CarbonLite standards as a means of tackling fuel poverty and public health issues, Jaime has successfully led calls for regulatory change to new-build energy standards for social housing in Wales. This has resulted in the acceptance by Welsh Government of the CarbonLite New Build Standard for Social Housing Grant funding in Wales.

Breakout Session: Retrofit Detailing from a Builders Perspective
Bill co-founded 21°, formerly Green Building Store in 1995 which has evolved into a leading national design and supplier of Passivhaus windows and doors, MVHR ventilation systems, and airtightness products. He has led on the Company’s pioneering Passivhaus projects, including the Denby Dale Passivhaus, as well as developing a Passivhaus approach to a number of radical retrofits. Having originally trained as a Quantity Surveyor he has over 45 years of practical building experience. His pioneering work on the Longwood Low-Energy House in the early 1990s was the beginning of his low-energy and Passivhaus journey.
As a Certified Passivhaus Consultant, much of his time is taken up with giving pragmatic building advice to clients, designers, and builders as well as lecturing and training with Coaction.
Bill is a passionate advocate for better building in the UK, seeing the Passivhaus standard as exemplary for the UK industry in meeting its climate change responsibilities. He is committed to making the lessons he has learned from Passivhaus accessible and easily understandable for the wider construction industry.
Hannah Dixon Progress in Practice
Breakout session: A Day in the Life of an AECB Certifier
Hannah Dixon is the founder of Progress in Practice, a small and innovative architecture practice in Greater Manchester, specialising in Passivhaus, retrofit and low energy homes and buildings. The practice delivered the first two AECB certified retrofit projects in Greater Manchester in 2023 and are advocates for the Passivhaus and AECB approach. Hannah is passionate about inclusivity in design and sits on the board of the GM Community Led Homes hub.
