Studio DC Architects

Bio

Studio DC is a multi-faceted Architecture studio which combines a creative approach to design with a solid grounding in the practical concerns for every project. We believe that all buildings must be carefully designed and developed in order to conserve energy throughout all aspects of their creation and their use – from the way day-lighting is utilised to the embodied energy of materials used in their construction and of course the thermal performance of the building envelope. We are passionate about passive sustainable construction and have expertise in designing and detailing buildings to comply with Passivhaus standards. Andrew de Carteret - Studio DC's founder - is a Passive House Consultant / Designer certified by the Passivhaus Institute We believe that for a building to be truly sustainable it must be able to adapt to the constantly shifting needs of its users over time. The transform-ability of a building is something that we seek to achieve as we develop our architectural designs in close dialogue with our clients.

Devon Passivhaus

Studio DC Architects negotiated a challenging planning process to secure this modern yet contextual new ‘Passive House’ in a beautiful rural Devonshire setting. A Passive House is an ultra low energy building with extremely high levels of insulation and air-tightness. Due to the high specification these houses use 70% less energy than current new build standards and up to 90% less than the average house stock. The 5 bedroomed house has a bold contemporary pitched roof form with naturally weathered timber cladding which resonates with its wooded setting. At ground floor level generous open plan areas open out to external decks to the front and back connecting inside and out. Large concealed sliding doors allow the space to be used flexibly – partitioned or fully open plan to suit the situation.
