Baile Geamhraidh, Special Place with Low Energy House

The project which has re-established the use of an abandoned cottage and barn aims to create a ‘place’ forming a special environment at the head of a small shallow glen atop the island. The client brief was for a low maintenance low demand dwelling open to the landscape and informed by a Passive House approach. The simple built form helps to reduce wind loads and heat losses and the grass roof sits the building comfortably into the setting. The large living/dining/kitchen space runs east-west to capture stunning views of the Great Glen and Ben Nevis as well as solar gain and opens on to three covered verandahs. The lower floor provides two bedrooms and bathroom accommodation. Construction is with Scottish timber: JJI joists for all structural components with cedar from Ardnamurchan for the vertical cladding.
