Markos Design Workshop Architects

Bio

We value direct one-to-one relationships with our clients. There is no getting lost in a corporate machine; you work directly with me throughout the design and building process. We believe this creates the best outcome by ensuring responsiveness to the site in question, context, timeliness, and budgets, while delivering the best possible outcome for you. We believe good design should be accessible to everyone. A key part of being a proficient architect is working effectively within the material, time, and budgetary constraints of each project. In our view, good design is not dependent on high spend; it’s dependent on the right principles, intent, and approach, and quality care. Our practice is nationally recognised, and even internationally, for our expertise in the use of timber as a structural and architectural material. As a young practice, we take a technology-first approach to both design and construction. We model in 3D, use AI as a visual aid, draw digitally and yes, we still hand-draw. In terms of construction, we use Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) and work closely alongside trusted contractor partners. Our background as a practice is based on Peter’s upbringing in carpentry. In turn, this practice has given us an understanding of the integration of materials and structures, enhancing our ability to determine 'what will work', both from a financial and construction perspective. Our proficiency in this domain makes us a favoured choice among clients, engineering firms, and contractors. Alongside our architecture services, our core business, we run our own unique homestay business. The business is based on homestays we have designed, built and rent out. Developing our properties gives us, as an architecture practice, our own first-hand insights into the financial realities of developing and building our own projects, as well as the commercial realities in running a unique homestay business.

Monocoque Cabin

The Monocoque Cabin is a timber cabin designed, owned, and operated by Markos Design Workshop, a live demonstrator of the DfMA timber system we specify for clients. Manufactured off-site in controlled factory conditions and assembled on site in days, the cabin combines an organic timber shell with fabric-first detailing, natural insulation, and breathable wall build-ups. The approach minimises construction waste, lowers embodied carbon, and delivers high thermal and airtightness performance in a small footprint. The project began as an experimental prototype and was part-funded by the Airbnb OMG Fund and Innovate UK following a competition win. It now operates as a luxury holiday let in the West Midlands, giving the practice direct, first-hand experience of how design decisions play out in build cost, operational performance, and guest use — knowledge fed directly back into client projects.
