Post: Inside a Passivhaus Retrofit: The value of opening your doors – you learn as much as you share

DK Building recently hosted another Passivhaus Open Day at our EnerPHit Plus retrofit project in Liverpool.

The open day welcomed an audience as varied as it was engaged: architects, an architecture student, past and prospective clients, members of our professional network and members of the public exploring what a whole-house retrofit to Passivhaus standard actually looks like.

A Different Stage, A Different Story

This visit came at a more advanced point, past the major structural works and into the finishes stage.  Some of the critical fabric elements, including insulation and the mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR) system, remained visible in places, giving visitors a rare chance to see how the building’s performance is achieved layer by layer.

The standout addition since the last event was a fully operational solar tile installation, complete with a working system for generating, storing and exporting electricity.  For the first time, visitors could see live performance data rather than projections, a detail that resonated strongly, particularly with technically-minded attendees.

Why It Matters: Comfort, Health, and Efficiency

For Daniel and the DK Building team, the appeal of Passivhaus retrofit work goes beyond energy performance figures.  The goal is to create interiors that are quiet, comfortable and healthy to live in, while achieving levels of energy efficiency that are still uncommon in the UK.  Seeing that enthusiasm reflected back by visitors many encountering this standard of retrofit for the first time was, by Daniel’s account, one of the most rewarding parts of the day.

One visitor in particular illustrated this well: an architecture student hoping to specialise in Passivhaus design, who had never before seen a retrofit built to this standard in person.  For her, the open day offered a first-hand look at a building type she had so far only studied.

A Two-Way Exchange

Open days like this are as much about listening as they are about showcasing. Visitors ranged from those with detailed technical questions about costs, sequencing and what the team might do differently next time, to those content to observe quietly.  Several past clients who had missed the previous open day made a point of attending this time.

Perhaps the most memorable moment of the day came from a visitor who suggested an improved method for installing the additional solar tiles, an approach the team hadn’t previously considered. It was a reminder that opening a project up to public scrutiny often pays dividends in unexpected ways.

Looking Ahead

Those who attended were genuinely invested homeowners actively considering their own renovation journeys and professionals keen to understand the practicalities of retrofitting to Passivhaus standard.  For DK Building, the appeal of running more of these events is clear, good for business, good for the planet and good for the wider push toward better, healthier homes.
