James Williamson Architects

Bio

James Williamson Architects is a UK-based architectural practice focused on low-energy, fabric-first residential design. Led by James Williamson, a Chartered Architect with over 10 years’ experience, the practice works with homeowners and small developers who want to improve the comfort, performance, and long-term efficiency of their buildings — without unnecessary complexity or risk. Much of the work involves existing homes: extensions, renovations, and upgrades where energy performance, buildability, and real-world constraints need to be carefully balanced. New-build homes are approached with the same mindset — prioritising simplicity, thermal performance, airtightness, and sensible detailing from the outset. The practice takes a performance-led approach, starting with how a building should actually work: how it retains heat, how it’s ventilated, how materials behave over time, and how changes affect comfort and running costs. Sustainability is treated as a practical design problem to be solved early — not something added later once decisions are already locked in. Clients often come to the practice feeling unsure where to start, concerned about costs spiralling, or wary of committing to designs before understanding what’s realistic. Early-stage feasibility and strategy work is therefore a core part of the service, helping clients test ideas, understand constraints, and make informed decisions before significant money is spent. James Williamson Architects collaborates with trusted consultants as needed, tailoring the team to suit each project rather than forcing a one-size-fits-all solution.

1960s Bungalow Renovation, Woking

This project involved the careful upgrade and extension of a 1960s bungalow in Woking, Surrey, to support modern family life while significantly improving comfort, space, and overall building performance. The existing house suffered from a fragmented layout, limited natural light, and dated services typical of its era. Our approach began with re-thinking the internal organisation to reduce circulation waste and create a clear, open-plan kitchen, dining, and living space with a strong connection to the garden. A substantial rear extension and loft conversion were introduced to increase usable floor area while maintaining a simple, coherent building form. Thermal performance and day-to-day comfort were key drivers throughout the design. The project included upgraded insulation, new high-performance windows and doors, and a coordinated approach to heating and electrics, helping to improve internal comfort and reduce energy demand. Material choices were made with durability and long-term performance in mind rather than short-term aesthetics. Externally, new cladding, roofing, and landscaping were designed as part of a holistic upgrade rather than a cosmetic refresh, ensuring the extended building read as a single, well-resolved home rather than an obvious add-on. From early feasibility and planning through to construction-stage involvement, the project demonstrates how a typical mid-century bungalow can be adapted into a comfortable, efficient family home through measured interventions, clear sequencing, and a fabric-first mindset — without over-complicating the build.
