Are there any waxes/oils/varnishes that will help toughen pine floorboards?

Don't know about toughening up (!) but we really rate OS hardwax oil, think it's called something else now.

To add to Chris' point, the Polyx does wear gracefully whereas I have experienced varnish look like it has worn though in patches.
Chris is there a product to add to wash water for maintenance of hardwax finish or did I imagine that?

There is, but I am not advertising it here.

But does it work? Has anyone used it? Or equivalents from other manufacturers?

In Scandinavia they use a green liquid soap to wash timber floors – it has linseed oil in it so feeds the wood at the same time – Ecover's floor cleaner is green, liquid and has linseed oil in it! (but I haven't tried it!)
